Christmas Cards

I entered some work I did last year into a Christmas card competition the other day and it came up trumps. The charity in question is The Girls Network who are a fantastic. I also mentor for them and all the money raised from card sales goes towards the charity and helping to inspire and support young women. You can order cards here.

Birth of a Star. Before. Middle. End

Before (space and some space dust)

Middle (space and some dust and gas)

End (ish) dust and gas swirling around creating the protostar.

This weeks assignment was to illustrate before, middle and end. I ummmed and eerrred about what almost all week then on Sunday, whilst watching Brian Cox wax lyrical about the solar system I thought I'd do the birth of star. I feel like I cheated a bit as I did the whole thing digitally and didn't touch my sketchbook BUT this assignment feeds into our final piece and I have an idea forming around the Aurora Borealis so I figure brushing up my Photoshop, magical sky skills, won't go a miss.

IF - Rudyard Kipling

This weeks coursework piece was to illustrate the poem If by Rudyard Kipling. I'm kind of surprised my illustration ended up looking like this. I have mixed feelings about the advice the poem itself has to offer but its certainly fruitful territory in terms of vivid language for illustration.

"The pursuit of an idea is exciting as the pursuit of a Whale"

"The pursuit of an idea is exciting as the pursuit of a Whale"

I started an illustration evening course this September. Each week we're given assignments, which is great as it forces me to try new things. Last week we were each given a quote to illustrate. This one isn't my final piece so its a bit unfinished but its the one that came up trumps with my friends.
